Yancoal’s Premier Coal mine hits 100Mt milestone
Yancoal Australia’s Premier Coal operation has surpassed 100-million tonnes of coal production since mining began at its current site in 1996, a milestone that reinforces its role as Western Australia’s largest coal producer.
“Reaching 100-million tonnes is a testament to the tireless effort of our workers and the continuing support of our local community for the past 29 years,” said Premier Coal operations manager Braedon Gaske.
Located near Collie, about 200 km south of Perth, the opencut mine supplies thermal coal used primarily for domestic power generation. Yancoal manages the operation on behalf of majority shareholder Yankuang Energy Group.
The mine runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and employs more than 500 people. In addition to energy supply, Premier Coal plays a significant role in the local economy, supporting regional industries and community initiatives in Collie, a town of about 9 000 residents.
Gaske noted the company’s ongoing efforts in land rehabilitation and community engagement, citing Lake Kepwari – a former mine site converted into a recreational lake – as a model of long-term environmental planning. “We are equally proud of our rehabilitation initiatives, like Lake Kepwari, which demonstrate our long-term vision for environmental stewardship and community benefit,” he said.
